By participating in simulations of international institutions such as the United Nations General Assembly, African Union and the International Court of Justice, as well as engaging in structured discussions on emerging global challenges, committee sessions, policy-drafting exercises, training workshops and networking activities, young leaders were able to develop their leadership skills, deepen their understanding of global affairs, and engage in meaningful intercultural exchanges with fellow participants.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ University in Zambia participated in the conference with a delegation of 10 students, representing the institution across different committees. The students distinguished themselves through active engagement in discussions, sessions and simulations throughout the conference, with one of our students receiving the ‘Best Delegate Award’ and another two students receiving Honourable Mentions, all in recognition of their outstanding performance, participation and contributions to the conference.

The event brought together 186 learners from Soneshine School, Crested Crane Academy, and International Maarif Schools, offering them an opportunity to strengthen their public speaking abilities while experiencing the University’s vibrant academic environment firsthand.

The training was facilitated by Dr Mary Mandiringana, Dean of the School of Business, who led an interactive and practical session focused on effective communication, presentation techniques, and the confidence required to speak before an audience. Throughout the programme, learners were encouraged to develop skills that will support both their academic success and future professional aspirations.

Members of the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ University team, including Dr Daniel Mpolomoka, Miss Abigail Chalwe, Miss Elinai, and representatives from the University’s Marketing Department, also contributed to the day’s activities, providing participants with insights into university life and the opportunities available through higher education.

One of the highlights of the programme was a series of presentations delivered by current ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ University students, who shared their personal educational journeys and experiences studying at the University. Their resonated strongly with the visiting learners, offering authentic perspectives on the benefits of pursuing higher education and demonstrating how confidence and determination can help unlock future opportunities.

The forum was designed to foster student development, focusing on strengthening critical thinking, analytical reasoning, research capacity and leadership and public speaking skills.

Students from a range of academic disciplines took part in the forum, which featured the motion ‘‘This House Believes That Social Media Has Done More Harm Than Good to Youth Development.’’, providing students with an opportunity to engage in evidence-based debate on a contemporary issue affecting society. Throughout the debate, participants were encouraged to research, analyse and defend arguments, all the while respectfully engaging with opposing viewpoints. The forum also served as an introductory platform for students interested in future debate competitions with other educational institutions in the region.

The forum commenced with opening remarks delivered by Student Affairs Officer Mr Limbani Mwale, who welcomed participants, outlined the objectives of the event and facilitated an orientation session covering the different roles and responsibilities of debate team members, the rules and judging criteria, various techniques for argument development and rebuttal, as well as the overall structure and principles of effective debate.

Following the opening remarks and orientation session, participants were divided into teams, where they debated the motion by presenting and defending a range of arguments. Drawing on in-depth research, nuanced perspectives, and persuasive reasoning, each team delivered a compelling and well-structured case, requiring careful deliberation on behalf of the forum’s judges in order to select a worthy winner.

Prior to the forum’s conclusion, participants engaged in a brief reflective session during which they shared lessons learned and experiences gained from the debate process, highlighting improvements in their confidence and teamwork and public speaking skills.

The signing ceremony took place at the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ offices in Nairobi and marked the beginning of a strategic partnership designed to support HAM International staff, associates, and beneficiaries through ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½â€™s scholarship platform.

Under the agreement, eligible members of HAM International will have access to guaranteed scholarships for internationally recognised online Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degree programmes offered through ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½â€™s partner universities in the UK and Africa.

The collaboration goes beyond scholarship support. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ and HAM International will work together on initiatives that promote professional excellence, innovation, and community empowerment.

The aim of the event was to reframe menstrual health as a national development priority requiring coordinated policy and practical action by recognising its detrimental effects on the health, education and economic opportunities of women and girls across Zambia.

The event began with a showcase of menstrual health products, research and social enterprise innovations from across Zambia, followed by opening remarks from ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ University Vice-Chancellor Professor Douglas Kunda. The Vice-Chancellor called on participants to take what they have learned from awareness campaigns such as this in order to create practical, real-world, sustainable solutions to menstrual health challenges. Subsequently, Guest of Honour Ms Malama Munkonge spoke to participants, followed by a keynote address by Mr Bernard Miti.

After the keynote address, Dr Nachizya Edith Namukanga, the acting doctoral coordinator at ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ University and epidemiologist affiliated with Women in Global Health Zambia, presented evidence-based analysis on how menstrual health affects economic opportunities, educational outcomes and gender equity in Zambia.

Next up was Youth WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) ambassador and consultant, Ms Nkosha Kachusha, who encouraged participants to examine menstrual health through a policy and systems lens. Particular attention was paid to how systemic and infrastructural changes can either support or undermine progress in addressing menstrual health challenges. Ms Kachusa also explored financing gaps in menstrual health programmes, market opportunities for locally produced menstrual health products, as well as the importance of community ownership and participation in effective and sustainable menstrual health solutions.

Following the panel discussion, participants engaged in interactive group dialogue, during which they reflected on barriers to and opportunities for policy reform and implementation. The groups also examined the roles of various stakeholders ranging from those in government, the private sector, civil society and local communities, in collectively and individually addressing and improving menstrual health challenges and outcomes across the country.

Lastly, during the youth innovation pitch session, selected youth-led social enterprises presented their menstrual health solutions, demonstrating strong potential for both investment and scalability. The session effectively showcased the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of young Zambians in addressing menstrual health challenges.

Overall, the event proved to be an incredibly worthwhile endeavour, providing valuable insight into menstrual health challenges faced by women and girls across Zambia, while fostering open, constructive dialogue, reducing the stigma typically associated with discussions concerning private health issues.

As part of the programme, attendees were given a guided tour of the Kusewera Community Centre to gain a deeper understanding of the organisation’s work, which is centred around its three key pillars: education, health, and play. The centre relies heavily on support from partners in the USA, as well as fundraising initiatives, to sustain its programmes and continue serving children and the surrounding community.

A key highlight of the event was a mentorship session led by ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ University Chief Operating Officer, Madam Chrissie Kafoteka, with members of the Girl Power female club. During the session, Madam Kafoteka encouraged the girls to remain committed to their education, stay focused on their goals, and believe in their ability to succeed.

The day also featured interactive games, creative play activities, and engagement sessions between staff, students, and children, creating a joyful and enriching atmosphere for everyone involved. The activities promoted compassion, teamwork, and social responsibility among the volunteers while offering the children an enjoyable and memorable experience.
